Catalog Description

An analysis of technologies for connecting computers and computer related devices into networks. This course covers the terminology and the major components of networks: architecture, topologies, hardware components, connections, protocols, network operations, network administration, support, and troubleshooting. Wide Area Networks (WANs) are also covered. Follows the objectives of the CompTIA Net+ certification exam.

ADVISORY (Recommended Prerequisites): CNIT 100 or 101. Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Describe and explain the fundamental concepts relating to LANs (Local Area Networks), including how they work and why they are used.
  2. Identify and explain the basic physical network types, including topologies, transmission media and network boards.
  3. Describe the commonly use access controls on LANs.
  4. Describe the differences between the commonly used software packages for LAN servers.
  5. Use a common LAN.
  6. Explain how LANs are connected with other networks, including other LANs, mainframes and WANs.
  7. Explain the basic concepts of LAN selection, management, and security.
